21st-century theories of gentrification and urban renewal have rendered public space as a functional space where one can no longer linger, sleep or rest without legal consequences. City administrators continue to pursue projects which do not involve the local population in terms of real needs and desires, resulting in constant relocations. Seen from this viewpoint, public space is constantly structured and organized without the “local mind”, in anthropological terms, is the culture of inhabiting and interacting with the space, which can then find expression only in such marginal territories such as peripheral spaces, border areas, abandoned or degraded neighborhoods as well as territory deemed wasted. It is within these supposed margins that the most interesting things happen, where
cohabitations exist and enjoy an uncontrolled and natural development. This series of videos depict spontaneous actions registered in the public space of several cities in Europe: Berlin, Zuerich, Palermo so far. These moments take place in shared public spaces with collective communal ownership, such as parks, squares and streets. It regards public space as an indicator of the various circumstances in which we live in and as well as a location where, ideally, all members of the public are empowered to celebrate their individuality and express their own narratives.
